With You Every Step of the Way
Religious Abuse/Trauma
We are experienced in working with clients from a variety of faiths who are struggling to understand how they can stay in relationship with the faith that they grew up in and disentangle the ways that they experienced their faith experiences as traumatizing, punitive, painful and confusing, particularly regarding their sexual lives and practices.
We have worked extensively with the Jewish religious community, including the Chareidi community as well as clients from conservative and/or evangelical Christian communities.
Somatic Experiencing
So many of my clients have worked hard in therapy, worked hard in their recovery, and have language for the things that have happened to them. Despite this, they continue to get triggered and activated by traumas and beliefs from their past and it impacts every aspect of their lives. Somatic Experiencing is the ability to connect with our bodies in order to heal and spend less time in the stories we tell ourselves.
Trauma Treatment
Do you compare your traumatic experiences to other people’s in order to minimize it or deny it? Do you struggle to name what happened to you, to identify it as trauma? are you afraid to talk about your childhood because it feels blaming and disloyal to your parents? I have been trained in phase-based trauma treatment, TFCBT for adolescents, and the STAIR model for adults. These treatment modalities use psychoeducation, learning, and practicing of healthy coping skills, and developing of a narrative in order to bear witness, honor, our stories and by doing so, release the power they have over us.
Sex Addiction Recovery
Working with addiction and people in recovery forces me to learn about, challenge myself, and grow every day. I experience both addicts and partners in recovery to be some of the most spiritual and connected people I have had the privilege to meet. I see clients individually, couples, and group therapy for both addicts and partners.
Facilitated Disclosure for Children and Adult Children of Addicts
Research shows that regardless of the ages of your children and their ability to understand what is happening in the home, they know. Maybe they don’t know the word “addict” or sex addiction. Maybe they “only” learn to keep the secrets in their home, feel the need to protect a parent, are exposed to unhealthy relationship dynamics between the parents that they will bring into their future relationships…they know enough. Searching for Change customizes disclosures for families that work with the entire family and for every age of child from middle school to adult children. These disclosures can be done both in Chicago or out of state.
Why Searching for Change?
The therapists at Searching for Change have been on that same journey and have realized that looking to achieve the fantasy of “normal” is a way of staying in pain. We stop working to achieve what we think we SHOULD do or SHOULD be. At Searching for Change, we don’t pathologize our behaviors and self-protective coping mechanisms.
Instead, we work to understand and respect their purpose and function while also honoring the behaviors by learning and building on other coping mechanisms that allow us to love in our adult lives. Whether it is addiction, shame, fear, self-loathing, anger, or the destructive tendencies connected to behaviors: let’s work to understand and resource from places of strength.
WHY YOU CAN DARE TO TRY AGAIN
How many therapists have you tried to stay with? How many different approaches, medications, diagnosis have you had? So many of us are just waiting for the relief in finding THE ONE person or THE ONE label that will finally explain why we are who we are, how we got this way, why we feel stuck like nothing can change or get better.
We start each new therapy with skepticism, but have the secret hope that “this time…” We are willing to take on any diagnosis, no matter how painful, if it will just explain why we continue to suffer. We just want to be “normal” and assume that everyone else has the key to that secret except for us.
Can you relate?
